Deputies say child found playing near drugs, needles

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A husband and wife are under arrest after deputies in Laurel County say they found the couple’s child playing near drugs and hypodermic needles.

Laurel County Sheriff John Root says deputies went to a home off Pepperhill Drive on Monday night after a domestic complaint.

They say they learned one person there, 29-year-old Raymond Lewis Elam Jr., had an outstanding warrant.

Deputies say they found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia throughout the home and the couple’s four-year-old child playing on the floor with drugs and hypodermic needles nearby.

Elam was arrested and charged with criminal abuse, possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), possession of drug paraphernalia.

His wife, 35-year-old Stephanie Elam, was also arrested and charged with criminal abuse, possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), possession of drug paraphernalia.

Social services was called and the child was removed from the home.
