Deputies: Man charged after 40-mile chase at speeds up to 118 MPH

MENIFEE COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A 31-year-old California, Ky., man faces a host of charges after leading several police agencies on a 40-mile chase late Sunday night.

according to the Menifee County Sheriff’s Department, Joshua Baynum is charged with auto theft between $10,000 and $1 million, fleeing police, trafficking in stolen identities, 12 counties of wanton endangerment of police officers, aggravated first offense DUI, meth possession and several other charges.

The Menifee Sheriff’s Department said a deputy tried to stop Baynum at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday for traffic violations and suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle. Instead of stopping, Baynum took off, starting a chase that reached speeds of 118 mph and went through Montgomery County into Clark, ending in Winchester, according to Menifee deputies.

Baynum was forced to stop after Clark County deputies deployed a spike strip on I-64 and he managed to drive two more miles before stopping and fleeing on foot. Deputies, officers and troopers from several agencies chased him down in about a half mile, according to a Menifee County Facebook post.
