Demonstrators Protest Demolition of Historic UK Building

Protestors rallied Wednesday morning outside of the Hamilton House in an effort to get UK administrators to reconsider the demolition of the historic building on campus.

Drivers on South Limestone Street noticed numerous signs that read "Demolition is Forever" as members of the Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation marched against what they call "senseless demolition."

The Hamilton House, which was built in the 1840s, is one of several buildings that the university marked for demolition in order to build new residence halls for students.

The protestors believe that by avoiding preservation, the college is tearing down its own history as well as Lexington’s. One marcher who spoke with ABC 36 said UK is essentially "turning its back on the city" and should find alternate ways to bring students in.

UK spokesman Jay Blanton said the university has already worked to preserve a number of buildings, but the top priority of the college is "the success of students."

Demolition of the Hamilton House is slated to begin next week.
