Defense Attorney asks for more time to prepare for Daniel Ellis Murder Trial

MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – The trial for the murder of Richmond Police Officer Daniel Ellis was scheduled to begin in July, but could be delayed for at least another year.

Friday morning — Raleigh Sizemore and Gregory Ratliff were in a Madison County courtroom for a status hearing.

Sizemore and Ratliff are two of four suspects accused in connection  to the murder of Ellis, who was shot and killed while investigating a robbery.

During the hearing Sizemore’s attorney asked if the trial date could be delayed to allow her team more time to prepare their defense.

According to the Commonwealth Attorney David Smith, cases involving the death penalty take a significant amount of time.

Smith told ABC 36 he believed the defenses’ request was reasonable.

The defense previously made a motion to remove the death penalty as a possible sentence for Sizemore.

At the conclusion of the hearing – Judge William Clouse Jr. had not made a decision on the motions.

Another hearing has been scheduled for April 28th at 11 a.m.
