Crews battle fire at recycling plant
UPDATE: (6/11/18, 12:37 p.m.) — Stuff Recycling says it will reopen this week following a massive fire over the weekend.
The business posted on its Facebook page that it will be back open on Thursday at 8 a.m.
It has been closed since Saturday afternoon when fire broke out at the recycling plant, forcing nearby neighborhoods to shelter-in-place and closing down part of Winchester road.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – First responders are fighting a fire in Winchester on the Fayette-Clark county line.
Firefighters say the fire at Stuff Recycling in Winchester has a lot of mixed metals and even some cars.
Lexington fire crews are helping. They say the pile is 40 feet tall and 400 feet long, making the fire hard to get to. They expect to be there all night and into tomorrow.
There haven’t been any injuries yet, but the Transportation Cabinet is monitoring the smoke because it could create limited visibility for drivers on Interstate 64.
Throughout the afternoon, people living nearby have been sheltering in place with closed windows and air conditioning units off to avoid possibly dangerous air quality.
