Lexington, Ky (WTVQ): The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is making statewide upgrades to their motor vehicle system, meaning county clerks offices are taking a temporary pause starting at the end of the year.
According to. Susan Lamb with the Fayette County Clerk’s office, the shutdown will last about two weeks in Fayette County. From January 2nd to January 16th, people will not be able to use in person or online motor related services.
“Anything with the motor vehicle renewals. We’re talking the license plate renewals of your registration, transfers, leans,” Lamb said.
Lamb says the current system is more than 40 years old. Lamb says the upgrades for this system has been in the works for years. “There are approximately 350 million records if you can imagine in 120 counties this is statewide.”
Online vehicle registration will be unavailable starting December 28th. According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, it’s going to bring the new system up Monday January 8th. “There will only be five counties on that first day if everything goes well then Tuesday the 9th they’re going to add 30 more counties,” Lamb said.
The motor vehicle office processes 3 to 800 mail in requests for registration renewals in a day. “We’re going to take the 11th and the 12th and were going to process everything that we have received in the mail from the 29th through January 11th.”
This will be used as a training tool to help ensure things run smoothly when Fayette County opens back up to the public on the 16th. Lamb says if you need to renew registrations this year. You should do it early, on or before December 22nd.
“If your birthday is in January you are going to have to wait until after January 16th, because the taxes are not posted into the new system until after January 1st,” she said.
The pause will not have an impact on anyone looking to get or renew a driver’s license.
