Coroner: Woman dies after being attacked by dog

CLARK COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A woman is dead after being attacked by a pit bull in Clark County, according to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office says April Collins was found unresponsive by her husband Thursday evening when he arrived at their home in Winchester.

Sheriff Berl Perdue says Collins was taken to the UK Hospital where she was pronounced dead Friday.

“I mean it’s a tragic situation to lose a life to begin with but to lose your life to your own pet,” Sheriff Perdue says. “It’s just unheard of.”

The sheriff says the home on Verna Drive had two pit bulls living there.

Neighbors say the dogs are known for their aggression, with the way they react to people walking by the house.

“Most people have started carrying golf clubs, walking sticks because they do lunge at the fence,” says Vice President of the Homeowner’s Association, Shelby Gill. “And the fence isn’t quite as high as it should be.”

Gill says he would not be surprised if there wasn’t previous reports of the dog’s aggressive behavior.

Sheriff Perdue says April had been attacked before and seeked treatment at the Clark Regional Medical Center on September 29th.

The pit bull was seized and taken to the Clark County Animal Shelter.
