Corbin High School ranked high in recent schools report
CORBIN, Ky. (WTVQ)- Corbin High School has ranked 18th out of 370 Kentucky high schools, according to U.S. News and World Report.
U.S. News and World Report released the “Best High Schools” rankings April 25. The schools are ranked according to their performance on state-required testing and how well they prepare students for college.
“Due to the diligence of our teachers, assistant principals, and support staff, I was pleased to see Corbin High School academically ranked 18th in the state, according to the U.S. News and World Report.” Corbin High School Principal John Crawford said. “Certainly, our English and mathematics scores continue to rise, coupled with our College and Career high marks demonstrates the hard work and perseverance by our students and educators. Secondly, the superior efforts of CHS teachers in regard to tutoring and mentoring gap kids are commendable, which obviously helped our exemplary rating.”
The state rankings are based on rankings received nationally from U.S. News and World Report. Nationally, Corbin High School ranked 1,466 out of 20,487 high schools, which is the total number of public high schools across the country with 15 or more students in their 12th grade class.
Corbin High School earned a silver medal status for their national ranking. U.S. News numerically ranked the top 6,041 public high schools, with each of those schools earning a gold, silver, or bronze medal status. Only 29.5 percent of the nation’s public high schools were awarded medals and only 10.3 percent received silver medals. Silver medal schools ranked from numbers 501 to 2,609. In the Kentucky rankings, four schools earned a gold medal status, 35 earned a silver medal status, and 47 earned a bronze medal status.
U.S. News and World Report publishes the “Best High Schools” rankings each year to identify the top-performing public high schools in the United States. To produce the 2017 Best High School Rankings, U.S. News partnered with a non-profit social science research firm, RTI International.
RTI International and U.S. News determined the rankings using a four step process to analyze school data. According to U.S. News and World Report, schools are ranked based on the performance of all students on the state assessments in reading and mathematics, the performance of disadvantaged students on the same assessments, the high schools graduation rate, and the degree to which the high school prepares students for college which is based on the number of students taking and passing college level courses and exams.
