Construction company cited in fatal Ohio overpass collapse

CINCINNATI (AP) — Federal officials have cited a company in charge of demolishing a highway overpass that collapsed and killed a construction worker for two safety violations and fined it $14,000.

Spokesman Scott Allen with the Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration confirmed the citations and fine against Columbus-based Kokosing (Koh-KOH’-sing) Construction. Allen says the company and OSHA agreed to the settlement Wednesday.

Kokosing didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment Wednesday.

The collapse during removal of an Interstate 75 ramp bridge killed 35-year-old Brandon Carl, of Augusta, Kentucky, on Jan. 19. The citations were for what OSHA terms "serious" violations.

The violations were for not having a sufficiently strong bridge deck to support the equipment used and allowing employees to continue demolition without ensuring corrective measures after a hazard was detected.
