Confederate Statues here to stay

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Last September, the urban county Arts Review board heard a lot of differing opinions at a public meeting, regarding how the city should display two confederate statues in the heart of downtown Lexington.

The statues of Confederate Generals John Hunt Morgan and John C. Breckinridge had their fate decided on February 17.

Mayor Jim Gray decided to keep the two statues in their current location, adding a plaque explaining their historical context. Mayor Gray said he also wishes to add more public art to the former Fayette County Courthouse square, to include more diverse representations of Lexington’s history.

Chris Corcoran, a senior adviser to Gray, told the Urban County Arts Review Board the redesign will have to wait until a proposed $30 million renovation of the courthouse has reached a later goal.
