Compassionate caravan giving out coats and food
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – As temperatures grow colder, area shelters become more full, and right now according to the Catholic Action Center, there are over 2,000 homeless adults, and 900 children without homes in Fayette County.
During the winter months, volunteers at the Catholic Action Center go out and deliver supplies to those people. With temperatures reaching into the low twenties, the compassionate caravan has come out early this year.
The center has been collecting supplies all year long so the area homeless can stay warm this winter.
“There is some food, there are some other things that are going out, supplies, blankets, hats, coats, gloves.”
Volunteers were giving out chili and giving rides to the shelters.
“Our caravaners will take them to the hope center, the salvation army or here so they do have a place to be out of this brutal cold tonight.”
Ginny Ramsey says one person living on the streets in Lexington died last year of hypothermia, with the doubling numbers of homelessness in Fayette County, she says she wants to be proactive.
“There is no reason in Lexington Kentucky that anyone should die of hypothermia or die alone.”
Ramsey says the most important part of the caravan is that volunteers let people know they count and they are loved.
The caravan will make more trips as we get closer to winter.
