Community mourns death of firefighter
MOUNT STERLING, Ky. (WTVQ)-
Montgomery County firefighter, 52-year-old Dewon Wells has died.
His friends and family are now trying to figure out why, as they share memories of their hero.
Many people in Mount Sterling had one specific thing to say about Dewon Wells, he wasn’t just a firefighter, he was a rock in their community.
“He was devoted to the department. Devoted to family and devoted to the community here,” said Jeffrey Jackson, battalion chief with the Montgomery County Fire Department.
Many in Montgomery County are still coming to terms with the death of Dewon Wells, a beloved first responder and active community member.
“You never know how much you’re going to miss someone or how much they did until they’re gone and that’s what we’ve noticed over the last few hours. You know he took care of this, took care of that and knew the passwords to this and how to backdoor certain things so,” said Jackson.
It’s not just the fire department in mourning, fellow first responders at the Mount Sterling Police Department decided to show their support in a very special way.
“We felt we could honor him the best we could by lighting the lights red. Showing our condolences to the Montgomery county fire department. We’re a brotherhood here. We’re all first responders. We’re all on the same team,” said Officer Ty Combs, with the Mount Sterling Police Department.
It is still unknown how Wells died but his brothers in uniform say they will be there for anyone in the community during this time of mourning.
“A lot of people here in Montgomery County and Mount Sterling knew Dewon. So over the next few days, weeks and coming months our support will be needed and we’ll support them,” said Jackson.
Wells funeral has been scheduled for this Thursday at one p.m. at First Baptist Church in Mount Sterling.
