Community members raise money for gas station clerk shot in failed robbery attempt
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)-It’s been a difficult time for chuck and his family, they recently learned that chuck will be paralyzed from the waist down. But his friends and marathon customers have been keeping him in their thoughts and prayers this week, raising money today at a big cookout in his honor.
Frequent Marathon customer Noel Richie says, “It was sad. It hurt me really bad…”
The emotions are still raw for Noel, after learning what happened to his favorite gas station clerk Chuck Moore.
Richie says, “He’s a resilient person. And more luck to you Chuck get well buddy.”
But friends like Noel and others are keeping their spirits up for Chuck, raising money at cookout in his honor.
In a Facebook video posted from the hospital Chuck tells his friends to “Keep the cards and letters coming. They’re really, really helping me out.”
Chuck was shot four times in an attempted robbery, but the military veteran didn’t let the suspect get away with any money.
Chuck says, “Everybody knows I’m a marine, so four rounds ain’t ****”
Chuck’s aunt Rhonda Chafin says, “I think he’s just trying to have his sense of humor. because right now he’s going through a real tough time.”
The shooting at the gas station on Lansdowne Drive leaves many unanswered questions, as there have yet to be any arrests made. Chuck’s family is calling for justice.
Chafin says, “We want these people. these people did not we think come in to rob the store because they did not after he was down. We believe it could’ve been gang related. And whatever it is, god will sort it out.”
Chafin says she doesn’t think he yet realizes that he may never be able to walk again.
Chuck says in his Facebook video update, “I’m doing pretty good. I don’t think I’ll have much problems.”
But friends are making sure money isn’t an issue for the steadfast marine in what is going to be a long road to recovery.”
Noel says, “it’s wonderful. I think it’s the best thing in the world. and I think everybody’s been coming in the store since this happened has been donating some kind of money for him. I hope he gets a million bucks. he’s deserving of it.”
All the money raised today will go towards chuck’s living and medical expenses. Most of Chuck’s family is Ohio. But his aunt says she’s moving to Lexington to help take care of him while he goes through several months of therapy.
