Coal Miner Killed At Bell County Mine
A coal miner was killed Tuesday in a coal mining accident in Bell County, according to the state.
Justin Mize, 31, of Harrogate, Tennessee, became the first coal miner to die on the job in Kentucky in 2014, according to the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet.
The accident happened at the Tinsley Branch Mine, which is operated by Commonwealth Mining LLC, according to the state.
Preliminary information from the Division of Mine Safety indicated that a right-side highwall miner cutter chain broke within a hole that was 68-feet deep.
Mize was hit by a rock while trying to retrieve the chain, according to investigators.
The accident remained under investigation.
