Closure scheduled June 11-13 for Combs Road in Perry County

PERRY COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ)  Drivers who travel Combs Road (KY 80/KY 550) in Perry County should prepare for a weekend closure Friday evening, June 11, through Sunday night, June 13.

The segment of the old KY 15 bridge crossing Combs Road will be demolished that weekend. In order to tear down the old bridge, all traffic on Combs Road must be detoured. The bridge crosses Combs Road at milepoint 7.9 on KY 80 and milepoint 0.0 on KY 550.

Demolition of other spans of the bridge, which also crosses the North Fork of the Kentucky River, will begin earlier, but there will be no significant traffic impacts. The removal of the portion of the bridge that crosses Combs Road requires the road’s closure.

The road beneath the bridge will close at 7 p.m. on June 11 and is expected to reopen late Sunday evening, June 13. The closure may extend past midnight on Monday, June 14, but the road should be open to traffic by 6 a.m.

The following traffic movements will be affected:

  • All traffic beneath the bridge will be blocked.
  • Drivers exiting KY 15 northbound at Combs Road will only be able to turn left onto eastbound KY 550, toward Airport Gardens. Westbound motorists on KY 550 will be required to turn right onto the ramp to northbound KY 15. A suggested detour route is KY 476 through Walkertown and Wabaco. Drivers needing to access KY 80 westbound should use the Hal Rogers Parkway to Exit 56, or they may use the new Morton Boulevard interchange on KY 15 to reverse direction on KY 15 to access KY 80.
  • Drivers exiting KY 15 southbound at Combs Road will only be able to turn right onto westbound KY 80, toward Combs. Eastbound motorists on KY 80 will be required to turn left onto the ramp to southbound KY 15. A suggested detour routes is KY 15 to KY 476 through Walkertown and Wabaco. Drivers needing to continue east on KY 80 should use the Hal Rogers Parkway by entering at Exit 56..

No signed detour will be posted. Message boards will be put in place to provide advance notice of the closure.

Traffic was recently shifted onto the new KY 15 bridge, which was built in 1965 and is being replaced as part of the KY 15 widening project that is nearing completion.

In case of inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances, the bridge demolition will be postponed until the following weekend.
