Cleanup at Natural Bridge Sate Park after strong winds cause damage

POWELL COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) –  Tuesday (5/07) Natural Bridge State Park experienced a powerful microburst, with winds reaching up to 80 mph and causing extensive but concentrated damage, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson. The NWS conducted a survey, estimating the peak wind at 80 mph with a path length of 300 yards and a width of 100 yards. Fortunately, there were no fatalities or injuries reported.

The survey revealed that several trees were toppled to the west and west-northwest, spanning a wide area. The winds descended over a ridge top and pushed westward into the valley, impacting a playground and outbuilding near Hoedown Island. Additionally, a tree fell on a cabin at a higher elevation farther west.

Guests at the park reported that the winds lasted for 3-4 minutes, consistent with the characteristics of a downburst. The Powell County Emergency Management assisted in escorting surveyors around the damage area.

Please note that the information provided is preliminary and subject to change pending final review by the National Weather Service.
