Clark County firefighters train to save themselves
They say they know how to rescue you, but when it comes to this training, it’s all about rescuing themselves. The sound of a emergency radio echoes throughout the water at the Winchester YMCA. It’s accompanied by Clark County firefighters but no one is in danger, including the firefighters themselves, and they’d like to keep it that way.
New gear is assisting the fire department in doing that and firefighters say it’s gear they’ve needed for awhile.
New NRS water throw ropes, life jackets, boats and helmets will help firefighters during swift water rescues. They say there were more than 100 of these rescues this spring in Central Kentucky.
They’re situations area fire departments are familiar with and ones they’ve seen prove deadly, most recently in Texas and Oklahoma where many are still missing due to high and fast moving flood water.
In Winchester, the water is still but the scenarios are practiced with purpose. Firefighters say the new gear was purchased within the budget for tens of thousands of dollars.
Firefighters will continue to train throughout the summer in Clark County.
