Clark Co Fiscal Court Votes To Rezone Farm To Heavy Industrial
The Clark County Fiscal Court voted, a final time, to rezone rural farm land for heavy industry.
People in the area have been fighting against this for months.
Neighbors call it a corporate take over.
"I think they totally got it wrong," said Deborah Alexander, who lives across the street from the site.
The Allen Company wants to turn 165-acres of farm land into an underground limestone mine.
"We’ve been threatened by a major corporation," said Deborah Garrison, who lives near the site.
Planning and Zoning voted six to one against rezoning, but the Fiscal Court voted three to one to rezone.
"This doesn’t make sense," said Alexander.
Only Clark County’s Judge/Executive voted against rezoning. He worries about the decision’s long-term impact.
"I think it could be very bad for that area. It could set a precedent of development in that area where it would be more industrial than recreation, or tourist, or residential even," said Henry Branham, Clark County Judge/Executive.
Alexander shares the same concerns.
"I just don’t see that this is going to be a livable place, or place that anybody would want to buy from us. As far as property values, I do believe that this will end it for us," said Alexander, who’s family has lived there since the 1800’s.
In one week, the zoning change goes into effect.
"I’m not a person that gets mad. I’m not that type. That’s not my reaction. My reaction would be more encouragement and motivation," said Garrison.
She will continue to fight.
