Lexington activates emergency winter weather plan as temperatures drop

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – As dangerously cold weather settles into the region, the City of Lexington has re-activated its Emergency Winter Weather Plan to help protect the city’s homeless population. The plan is now in effect through Monday.

City officials say the plan includes expanded emergency shelter options as well as free LexTran rides to shelters for anyone seeking warmth. Street outreach teams have been out across the community making contact with individuals experiencing homelessness, offering services, transportation and information about the incoming cold.

Charlie Lanter, Commissioner of Housing Advocacy and Community Development, said outreach workers are making sure people know what to expect: “Our street outreach teams are out engaging with folks, making sure they know what’s coming, inviting them to come in, and offering them services and rides to those services.”

Lexington Police are also urging residents to stay indoors and avoid driving unless absolutely necessary.

“If you can stay off the roadways please do. And since the temps are going to be lower, if you don’t have to be outside, don’t go outside,” Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said.

Meanwhile, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office has activated its Winter Care Program for Friday. Deputies will help transport medical personnel to hospitals, assist patients trying to reach essential medical appointments, check in on vulnerable residents, and pick up critical prescriptions. More details are available on the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.
