Churchill Downs hits pause on major projects due to Trump tariff uncertainty
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Churchill Downs says it is putting a hold on several major construction projects, and company leaders say it’s because of economic uncertainty tied to tariffs and trade policy under President Donald Trump.
In a release Wednesday, Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) announced it will temporarily pause work on The Skye Terrace, Conservatory, and Infield General Admission areas. The company cited rising construction costs and shifting macroeconomic conditions as key factors in the decision.
While those projects are on hold, Churchill Downs is moving forward with a $25 to $30 million renovation of two of its most exclusive spaces — the Finish Line Suites and The Mansion. The updates are expected to be completed by April 2026.
“We’re excited about the upgrades to the Finish Line Suites and The Mansion,” said CDI CEO Bill Carstanjen, in the release. “These are two of the most special spots at the track. Pausing the other projects was a tough call, but we need to be smart given the current economic climate.”
Carstanjen added that while fans may be disappointed by the pause, CDI remains committed to expanding and improving the historic racetrack for the long term.
The company plans to reassess the timeline and rollout of the larger projects as the economic landscape evolves.
