Churches Unite To Build Habitat For Humanity Home
The Habitat for Humanity Home is being built for Alimata Kumbakisaka, her son Dee, and daughter Marlene. Construction the home began on Wednesday morning. The journey to homeownership for the family has been a long one. The family is originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, but because of war they fled to Uganda until moving in Lexington in 2010.
"We had a war in my country, and we separated from my family, my brothers, my older sister, they run the other way. My dad died in the situation, and my grandma too was murdered in the same situation," said Dee.
The downtown churches have named their newly formed group the "Coalition of the Willing," or "cow" as they like to call it. Construction on the home is expected to last through October.
