Church damaged by floods still finding a way to celebrate Easter

Frankfort's Bellepoint Community Church relocates services after severe flooding earlier this month

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Heading into Easter weekend, some church services are looking different this year as the historic flooding earlier this month continues to have an impact.

As Easter Sunday services begin across the Commonwealth, some congregations are having to gather in different locations. Bellepoint Community Church is one of them, after floodwaters filled their building just a few weeks ago.

“All electrical panel was damaged, all the meter was damaged, all the floors had to come out, all the pews were ruined, pulpit, everything they had, sound system. Everything was just demolished,” said Morton McIntyre, Pastor of Seeds of Love Ministries.

Floodwaters rose so high they reached the post of the church sign. Anyone standing beside it would have been completely submerged.

Church leaders say the flooding created financial challenges, too. That’s why the entire cleanup effort has been led by volunteers, with help from other churches in the area, like Pastor McIntyre’s.

“It helps this church to see that people love them, and that we’re here to help. It may not be people who we see everyday we don’t even know their names, but we’re here to help,” McIntyre said.

Bellepoint Community Church is now holding its Easter service at a different location. McIntyre says despite the damage, the community of the church remains strong.

“The church is the people, the building is just temporary, the building is just a shell without the people you don’t have nothing. So the congregation is strong here and they’ll move forward, it’s a process but I think they’re willing to go through it,” said McIntyre.

Leaders at Bellepoint Community Church say they’re still accepting donations as recovery efforts continue. For information on how to give you can visit their Facebook page.
