Christian group at school causes backlash

JACKSON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A school assembly in Eastern Kentucky is raising controversy after a Christian music group performed for elementary students and handed out religious material.

According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, Breathitt County Superintendent Phillip Watts confirmed he has provided training to administrators after parents objected to a September 16 assembly at Breathitt Elementary.

The group, The 3 Heath Brothers, performed and distributed a devotional booklet called “Keys for Kids.”

The Freedom From Religion Foundation says the event violated the separation of church and state, claiming parents were not notified in advance.

Superintendent Watts said the district respects the constitutional rights of all students, and that new training is in place to prevent similar issues in the future.
