Centre program aimed at first-generation students

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Centre College says it is creating a scholarship program for first-generation students, backed by the largest single gift in the 195-year history of the liberal arts college in central Kentucky.

The school in Danville said Tuesday the first scholarships awarded by the Grissom Scholars Program will go to students in the fall of 2015.

Centre says 10 Grissom Scholars will be selected from each entering class, with 40 of the scholars enrolled by fall 2018.

The school says the program was established by Marlene and J. David Grissom.

The donation amount is not being disclosed at the donors’ request.

Besides a four-year, full-tuition scholarship, additional aid to cover remaining financial need will be available to students who qualify.

Annual tuition at Centre is $37,100, with room and board an additional $9,340.
