LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW)- Alan Stein doesn’t want to eat cat food. But, once again, that’s out of his control.

The Owner Emeritus of the 25-year-old Lexington Legends has promised that his team will win its Opening Day game several times before. It hasn’t worked out every season.

“Absolutely. I guarantee it and if we don’t I will eat cat food,” said Stein a quarter century ago when asked by a reporter if he could guarantee a win on the first day of the season.

Lexington lost to the Charleston Alley Cats and Stein picked up a spoon full of feline food to make good on his promise. This season, he’s tripling the stakes on the same bet.

“Once again, I guarantee that the Legends will win their opening game this year,” said Stein as he stood on home plate at team media day. “We’re going to go back to the roots. On the off-chance that we don’t beat Charleston we’ll be eating cat food.”

The ‘we’ in that sentence includes General Manager Justin Ferrarella and first-year Manager Paul Fletcher, who will also chow down if their ball club falls to the Dirty Birds on Friday, April 25 at 7 p.m.

“If the team fails me then Saturday night before the game, we’ll be eating cat food,” said Stein, as he looked back at the team chucking.
