Carrollton Bus Crash Survivor Hopes Documentary Inspires Others

The 1988 Carrollton Bus Crash remains the deadliest drunk driving-related crash in U.S. history.

Twenty-seven people died, 24 of them were children.

Larry Mahoney was driving drunk the wrong way down Interstate 71 near Carrollton, Kentucky, when he slammed his pickup head-on into the church bus.

The pickup pierced the bus gas tank, which exploded in flames, trapping the 67-people inside.

They were on their way home to Radcliff following a church outing at Kings Island Amusement Park.

Forty people survived, including Harold Dennis, who spearheaded the making of an 80-minute documentary about the tragedy entitled, ‘IMPACT:  After the Crash.’

Winchester native and Eastern Kentucky University alumnus Jason Epperson directed the film.

Dennis and Epperson plan to take the documentary to several film festivals and they hope to eventually get it on HBO.  They said it also would come out on DVD.

The crash in re-enacted in the documentary, which also features inspiring interviews with survivors and victims families.

Dennis said he thinks the film could inspire anyone who is the innocent victim of violence or tragedy.  He used the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting and Boston Marathon bombings as examples.
