Car stolen in carjacking found, possible suspects arrested

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Three people are in custody after they were found in a stolen car Friday afternoon, but it wasn’t before a brief pursuit, car fire and search from the air and the ground.

According to Lexington Police, an officer on patrol, near the Lansdowne neighborhood, spotted a car that matched the description of a car that was stolen at gunpoint, on Cambridge Drive, early Friday morning. The officer tried to pull the car over, but the car sped off, police say. There was a short pursuit, but police terminated it because of heavy traffic.

About five minutes later, another officer in the area spotted a rising cloud of smoke and started heading towards it, police say.

When the officer got to the source of the smoke, he found the same car, on fire, along Brookhill Drive. According to police, the car was empty.

While this was unfolding, Lexington Police dispatch started getting 911 calls of three people running through yards and jumping over fences.

Police officers set-up a perimeter and called in K9 units and used the Air One Helicopter to search for the three people that were inside the car. The fire department was also called in to extinguish the fire.

The three suspects were eventually located, a few blocks over, along Braemer Drive. All three were taken into custody.

Police say they don’t yet know if the three suspects arrested were the same people that robbed the couple on Cambridge Drive early Friday.

Police say they are still investigating. Fire investigators also responded to the scene to see why the car burst into flames.
