Candidates for State Representative in the 45th District talk gun safety
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW)– We’re now less than 50 days away from the General Election, and one key issue that’s remained at the forefront is gun safety, especially in schools.
ABC 36 spoke with the candidates in the 45th District for State Representative on each side of aisle about their plans on how to best move forward, and keep our citizens, safe.
“The truth is we just want responsible gun ownership,” said Adam Moore, the Democratic Candidate.
Meantime, his opponent, Republican Candidate, Thomas Jefferson added, “I’m pro gun. I don’t want to take guns away from the people that are law abiding citizens and there’s no law that you can ever enact, that’ll keep criminals from getting guns.”
Moore is a veteran who grew up in Kentucky.
Moore believes in the CARR Act.
“Crisis, Aversion and Rights Retention is a bill that would allow a judicial officer, I think your county judge, to then look at that evidence and say yes, we’re going to temporarily remove that person’s firearm from them, make sure they get the help they need,” added Moore.
Republican Candidate Jefferson defeated incumbent State Representative Killian Timoney in the primary election back in May.
Jefferson says this will be the first time he gets into politics in this magnitude.
Adding that he was in the car business for almost four decades, and is passionate about protecting kids and their education.
“What I’m passionate about is to continue to fight for our school, for our, for girl sports. I wanna keep men from being able to compete in those,” added Jefferson.
While Moore is also running on other issues as well, the topic of safe gun ownership is personal.
“It’s just trying to make sure that someone in a moment of darkness in a moment of depression, someone battling maybe a mental health episode doesn’t make that ultimate bad choice to hurt themselves or others and being someone whose grandfather shot himself, it hits close to home,” said Moore.
While Thomas Jefferson spoke on red flag laws, “red flag laws will take guns away from, from citizens without due process and then ask for due process afterwards. We already have laws in place as long as we follow those laws, the guns will not get their hands. But keep in mind the criminals will get guns no matter what.”
Election day is November 5th.
