Campground under water after devastating floods

GARRARD COUNTY, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Kenny Embry has owned Camp Nelson RV Park for 20 years.

“When you walk across the bridge and see everything you’ve worked for 20 years, and you can’t see any of it, it’s really rough,” Embry said. “We’ve had floods before, but not to this extreme, not this fast.”

On Friday, it was a race against the floods for people to move their RV’s and campers off the grounds, but Embry said some had to leave all their belongings behind.

“At this point, we’re just glad that nobody was hurt and everybody got out safely,” he said.

Now, the cleanup process begins.

“It’s day-by-day,” he said. “We got to wait for the water to get completely down to see what is actually left, how much we got left to do.”

He said best case scenario, they can get the campground back open in a couple of months. For the apartments on the grounds, he says it’s going to take a lot longer before everything is restored, and people can come home.

“It’s stressful, I mean a lot of people have no other place to go,” Embry said.
