Cal’s relationship with a legend

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – John Calipari was invited to be in the first John R. Wooden Classic ever held.  That was back in 1994.

UCLA against UK was the night cap, Kansas and Cal’s then No. 1 UMass team.  Even Cal joked back on Monday night at Rupp Arena while recalling the tale, “Who doesn’t belong in that group?”

For Cal…in the video as a young gun back in ’94 leading the Minutemen in his 7th year at the helm…it started a relationship with Coach Wooden.

Cal sung the “Wizard of Westwood’s” praises saying, “He set a standard in the college game and what could be done.”

Cal has since adapted that line to today’s version…claiming Kentucky is the gold standard in all of sports.

But the younger of the two coaches will still ask for advice every so often from his elder…and it all stems from that first classic at “The Pond” in Anaheim.

Hear from Cal on his relationship with Wooden in the video.
