Cal’s culture change
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The loss to UCLA was a wake-up call for the Cats. They came out of the locker room as flat as flat could be and allowed Bruins to amass a double-digit lead in a matter of minutes in the second half.
If the house is on fire everybody gets it. That’s Cal’s way of saying this thing is real. If you don’t do what you need to do, everyone suffers.
But the blame isn’t being placed solely on the players.
Part of changing the culture is getting guys to compete.
If they don’t want it, you can’t extract it.
So how can you get guys to compete harder and grind?
You start doing it in practice on every possession.
Then it’s up to the players to decide where they want to play in the future. The YMCA or NBA.
The players know they can’t allow a team to do what UCLA did Saturday in New Orleans. No double-digit runs can be handed easily to the opponent.
That said, the Cats don’t dwell on runs or the scoreboard for the most part and aren’t getting hung up that the UofL game is even a big deal that’s different than any other game.
