Cal defines coaching

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Coaching isn’t easy.

Coach Cal has it especially hard every season.  Sure he has top talent, but getting it all to mesh and win and bring home championships is the hard part.

Some times it clicks just right; other times, it’s fallen short.

What Cal continues to remind himself of is why he’s doing this and why he’ll never blame his players.

Hear his definition of being a great coach in the video.

“There’s hope.”

“We can do this.”

It’s all about keeping a positive outlook and the right perspective with a young, fragile team; it’s about building up and not tearing down.

Yes, Cal challenges his guys.

Yes, the coaching staff holds the team accountable and doesn’t quit when adversity hits and times get tough.

But what about Bill Self’s “attack” on his Kansas team recently?  Self said his Jayhawks lacked competitive spirit.

Has Cal tried the negative approach to push the Cats?  The public challenge and not just the personal, in the gym approach?

Are the two situations different?  Cal says he’s not questioning Self’s method or philosophy…because…(find out in the video).
