Businesses felt explosion at Blue Sky Pkwy UPS

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)-The UPS facility is in an industrial park that includes several other businesses. Several employees in the park felt Wednesday’s blast.

Jeff Rase wasn’t sure what to expect Wednesday morning when he got to work.

A coworker who got there first told him he witnessed an explosion at UPS next door.

“He felt, heard a large boom and the building shook,” Rase said.

He showed ABC 36 where ceiling tiles fell.

“There’s still some dust here on the counter underneath here. You can see some of the ceiling tile dust,” he said.

One business up the hill caught the explosion on surveillance video. ABC 36 talked to one man who says he got a similar view as he drove past.

“The building over to my left just blew up right beside me and took the roof off and there was smoke and insulation blew the doors out,” Claude Stamper said.

Stamper says the explosion shook his truck.

“I was concerned because I’d already been told it was a ups location and a lot of things went through my mind, you know, about terrorists,” Stamper said.

He was glad to hear police think it was accidental and told me he feels lucky.

“If it was a leak and it had been more gas, it could’ve reached me,” Stamper said.

That’s a sentiment a lot of people ABC 36 talked to share. They also said they’re thinking about the people who were hurt and send their wishes for quick recoveries.
