Budget bill hits Governor’s desk

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) — House Bill 6 is now at the hands of Governor Andy Beshear now that the legislative session has wrapped up.

One of the main topics of discussion throughout both the House budget proposal and the Governor’s budget: education.

“I think it’s important to note he’s not the only one who’s been pushing education,” Budget Chair Sen. Chris McDaniel said.

Others are saying the budget proposal does not put enough toward education, specifically CCAP.

“There’s about 32,000 children that are on CCAP, and with the amount of funding that was put into the budget draft, there would be approximately 16,000 children that would lose coverage in the next year,” Kentucky Youth Advocates Dr. Sarah Vanover said.

Republicans say they know the approval of House Bill 6 being signed by the governor is low.

“We’re optimistic that the governor will simply take it up and sign it, but we’re realists and know that he will probably want to deal with some line items, and we will take a look at those vetoes when we return in the middle of April,” Sen. McDaniel said.
