Three Dead in Rowan Co. After Shooting, House Fire
Three people are dead, a deputy wounded, and a home burned to the ground in Rowan County.
The Sheriff says a man called in to his office just after two Sunday afternoon, saying he was at a home off Island Fork Road in Morehead where he had just shot and killed his girlfriend.
When deputies and State Police showed up at the home, they say they tried to get inside to do a welfare check, and that’s when the man opened fire on them, hitting a Sheriff’s deputy in the hand.
Law enforcement fired back, but say they don’t believe they hit the suspect. Then, as they were pulling the wounded deputy to safety, State Police say the home erupted in flames.
The Sheriff says firefighters had to stay back because they weren’t sure if the shooter was still alive and might start firing again.
The Sheriff says three bodies were discovered in the burned home. The victims have not been identified.
The deputy who was shot was treated and released from the hospital.
