Bowling Green moving to end city primaries

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) — Bowling Green officials are moving toward eliminating primary elections for city positions.

The city commission needs a second reading of an ordinance to put the change into effect. Commissioners signed on to the change in a first vote Tuesday night.

The Daily News reported (http://bit.ly/1yYDkmF ) that the General Assembly made the change possible with legislation reclassifying cities during its last session. That law allows governments of cities classified as home rule class cities to forgo primaries for city elections.

Commissioner Melinda Hill says the change will reduce expenses for candidates, who will face one election rather than two.
