Bluegrass Barons to host vintage baseball tournament
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ/Press Release) – The Bluegrass Barons Vintage Base Ball Club will host the fifth annual Commonwealth Cup vintage baseball tournament at Waveland State Historic Site at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10. Admission is free.
The Commonwealth Cup is an invitational tournament for vintage baseball teams from the region. This year, the Bluegrass Barons will host the Eastwood Iron Horses of Dayton, Ohio, and Kentucky’s newest vintage baseball team, the Georgetown Gentlemen. The Commonwealth Cup is considered as the “fall vintage baseball championship” for Kentucky. Winners of the Commonwealth Cup will earn the title as well as the Commonwealth Cup trophy and prized bottle of bourbon.

Although the Eastwood Iron Horses and the Barons have played each other many times over the years, the two teams have met only once in 2021. The Iron Horses defeated the Barons in a spirited match in Fairborn, Ohio, on April 18.
The Bluegrass Barons are welcoming the Georgetown Gentlemen to Waveland for the first time on Sunday. Hailing from Georgetown, the Gentlemen played their first games at the Heart of Vintage Base Ball tournament in Fairfield, Ohio, last month. They recently earned their first win and placed second in the “Battle of Augusta” tournament in Augusta on Sept. 25.

Vintage baseball teams play according to the rules of baseball in 1869. Pitchers must throw underhanded and fielders must make plays barehanded, since gloves were not allowed until much later. Teams wear uniforms in the style of the 1870s, and the games recreate the way baseball was originally played. While vintage baseball teams play for the love of the game, the spirit of competition is very much alive as both teams try their hardest to win. Crowds are entertained with the excitement of barehanded baseball which respects the gentlemanly traditions of the game.
Waveland State Historic Site is the home field of the Bluegrass Barons Vintage Base Ball Club. It is the former home of Daniel Boone Bryan, a descendant of pioneer Daniel Boone. Waveland is located at 225 Waveland Museum Lane in Lexington.

The Commonwealth Cup tournament will be the final Bluegrass Barons home games of 2021. The Bluegrass Barons will finish the 2021 season with a doubleheader against the New Richmond Generals at New Richmond, Ohio, on Sunday, Oct. 17.
The Bluegrass Barons have a record of 16-13 in 2021. The Barons have a lifetime record of 99-50, and a win on Sunday will be the team’s milestone 100th victory.
