Blue Grass Airport sets new passenger record in 2018

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- A record number of passengers traveled through Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport in 2018.

The airport says that as the primary air transportation provider for central Kentucky, Blue Grass Airport saw 1,361,030 total passengers—enplanements of 682,662 and deplanements of 661,296. This is a 3.4% increase over last year and is the seventh consecutive year the airport has seen a record number of travelers.

There are many factors that contribute to this growth. The four airlines operating from Blue Grass Airport—Allegiant, American, Delta and United—continue to provide additional flights and larger aircraft. Many of the airlines’ 50-seat passenger jets have been replaced with comfortable two-class cabin aircraft, now offering more first-class seating options for travelers. Then, in June 2018, the airport continued to expand its non-stop destinations when Allegiant launched seasonal service between Lexington and Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS). In addition to the airlines’ growth, the airport’s convenience is often cited as a chief reason why passengers choose to fly to and from Blue Grass Airport.

Being so close to Lexington’s center of town and central Kentucky’s population, Blue Grass Airport is easily accessible for the traveling public. With fewer lines, fewer crowds and fewer parking aggravations, Blue Grass Airport provides a quick travel experience. For most passengers, home is just a short drive away when arriving back from their flights.

The year 2019 is off to an encouraging start with two new daily flights to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) beginning on February 14. Offered by United Airlines, this new service will provide central Kentucky with access to the nation’s capital and an excellent gateway for passengers connecting to other regions, including the mid-Atlantic, Northeast and Europe.

Blue Grass Airport, located in Lexington, Kentucky, offers non-stop and connecting service to hundreds of destinations worldwide. The airport serves more than 1.3 million passengers annually and supports our community with an economic output exceeding $370 million.
