Blue Grass Airport opens new facility for general aviation community
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)– Blue Grass Airport is excited to announce the grand opening of a new facility for general (private) aviation aircraft owners. At a Blue Grass Airport ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday evening, airport officials will be joined by the general aviation community to open WestLEX, a new facility specifically designed to provide support services to airport tenants leasing hangars on the west side of the airfield. This project is part of a $5 million investment by the Airport Board to support private aviation at Blue Grass Airport.
Conveniently located near the airport’s general aviation runway, WestLEX will provide hangar tenants with aircraft fueling services and towing assistance to/from individual hangars. Additional amenities include a large 12,000 square foot community hangar for aircraft storage and maintenance as well as a comfortable lounge, conference room, vending machines, restrooms and flight planning area.
Architecturally, this new facility adheres to an appealing style reflective of the region’s equine barns. Designed by J.R. Miller & Associates and constructed by Long Construction, it complements the award-winning architecture of neighboring hangars. The green and ivory color scheme was selected to blend seamlessly into the aesthetics of iconic Keeneland Race Course, located directly across the street from the airport.
To assist in staffing WestLEX, Blue Grass Airport is partnering with Eastern Kentucky University’s aviation department. For many years, the airport has collaborated with the university to provide valuable learning experiences for aviation students by offering internship opportunities, airport tours, hands-on experience, interaction with the airport leadership team and representation in the student aviation chapter.
The WestLEX facility is open year-round and can be accessed via the Gumbert Road entrance to the airport, immediately off Versailles Road. In addition to providing services for the general aviation community, the large hangar will be available for rental to those in the community seeking an event venue. TAC Air, the fixed-base operator located on the airport’s east side of the airfield, will continue to serve as the primary provider for all corporate aviation and private aircraft flying to Lexington.
Located in Lexington, Blue Grass Airport is served by four major airlines providing non-stop and connecting service to hundreds of destinations worldwide. The airport serves more than 1.3 million passengers annually and supports our community with an economic output exceeding $370 million.
