Blue Grass Airport announces United Airlines growth with larger planes and more Chicago flights

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Travelers flying out of Blue Grass Airport could soon see more seats and more flight options, as airport leaders say United Airlines is expanding its presence in Lexington.

According to a news release from Blue Grass Airport, United plans to upgrade its daily flight between Lexington and Denver this summer by switching to a larger Airbus A319 aircraft. The airport says the change will add more than 50 additional seats per day and help connect central and southeastern Kentucky travelers to destinations across the western United States, Canada, and beyond.

Airport officials say the larger aircraft is scheduled to begin service in Lexington on May 21, 2026.

More flights to Chicago

The release also says United will increase the number of daily flights between Lexington and Chicago beginning the same day. During peak travel periods this summer, the airline plans to offer up to seven daily flights, giving travelers more flexibility and easier connections through Chicago to more than 200 destinations across United’s network.

Tickets for both the Denver and Chicago routes are already available through United’s website and mobile app, according to the airport.

Airport leaders call it a “win” for the region

Blue Grass Airport President and CEO Eric Frankl said in the release that the expansion reflects continued growth for the region’s air service.

“Blue Grass Airport is grateful for United Airlines’ continued growth in our region,” Frankl said. “This larger, more comfortable aircraft and additional Chicago flight provide our passengers with more choices, greater convenience and improved access to destinations across the world.”
