Berea police keeping the peace with all-electric motorcycle

BEREA, Ky. (AP) — Police in one central Kentucky town are keeping the peace with a new all-electric, virtually silent motorcycle.

Berea Police Chief David Gregory told the Lexington Herald-Leader (http://bit.ly/1bynkOO ) the department is the first law enforcement agency in the state to use an environmentally friendly all-electric motorcycle.

The Zero DSP ZF9.4 motorcycle has a top speed of 98 mph and cost $21,000. Gregory says it will be used to patrol trails and parks, where its quiet operation won’t interfere with people relaxing.

The bike gets about 100 miles per charge. An eight-hour charge costs about $1.28. Manufacturer specifications say the equivalent fuel economy for city driving is 409 miles per gallon.
