Berea Head Start Program Softens Blow From Federal Budget Cuts
As part of the Federal Government sequester cuts, more than $400 million will be taken out of the Head Start program.
Head Start is a nationally funded pre-kindergarten program that helps young children from families living below the poverty line, prepare for school.
According to the National Head Start Association, more than 50,000 kids will have to be turned away from the program this year.
Last year Kentucky had more than 20,000 children in Head Start programs.
The NHSA said more than 800 of those kids will be turned away in 2013.
The Head Start program in Berea will not be among the programs turning children away.
Berea program administrators anticipated the federal cuts and re-allocated money from other programs, so no children would be turned away.
