MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (WTVQ) – Bell County High School will proceed with its graduation Friday night even though a pall will hang over the ceremonies after one of the graduates was killed in a traffic accident Thursday night and another was seriously injured.

Bell County High School posted the following statement on social media late this morning:

“Late last night, two members of our 2021 graduating class were in an automobile accident. Tragically, one student passed away due to injuries sustained and one is in critical condition. While we mourn the loss of a graduate, his family’s wish is that we continue. Tonight’s graduation will proceed at 7 p.m. The Bell County High School family asks for your prayers for the family and friends.”

The accident happened at about 11:15 p.m. at 19th Street and Hurst Road in Middlesboro. Troopers said they are investigating whether speed was a factor in the crash.

According to the KSP, the initial investigation indicates a 2004 Nissan Maxima was traveling north on 19th Street when it crossed the center line and struck a 2007 Volvo Semi Tractor trailer head on. The 18-year-old woman who was driving was flown to University of Tennessee Medical Center. She is listed in critical conditional.

The operator and passenger in the truck were both transported to Middlesboro ARH for minor injuries. Kentucky State Police Detective Andy Soltess is continuing the investigation and also reconstructing the collision.
