Bear caught after spotted near Magoffin Co. school

MAGOFFIN COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) — A black bear has been caught after it was spotted near an elementary school in Magoffin County.

The bear was in fields near Magoffin Elementary School on Saturday.

The superintendent Scott Helton says all schools were notified.

Fish and Wildlife patrolled the area but could not find it.

The bear was spotted again Monday afternoon by a school resource officer.

Fish and Wildlife tranquilized it and captured it.

The superintendent says the bear was not harmed just removed from school premises.

“We weren’t on lockdown but we were just actually being cautious, just with our kids and not letting them out,” says Superintendent Helton. “We still had the public have access to the building and things of that nature but it was not a normal day when you have a bear out in the fields.”
