Battle of Perryville commemoration this weekend

PERRYVILLE, Ky. (AP) – The commemoration of Kentucky’s largest Civil War battle is being held this weekend.

The Kentucky Parks Department says the commemoration is set for Oct. 6-7 at the Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site in central Kentucky. This year, officials are highlighting a program called School of the Soldier that allows participants to experience what it might have been like to be a Civil War soldier. They will enlist, organize into squads and companies, perform military maneuvers and receive mail from home.

The event will also offer battlefield tours, military camps and drills, lectures, food and vendors. The statement says there will not be a battle re-enactment this year.

Each year, the park in Boyle County commemorates the 1862 battle that left more than 7,600 soldiers killed, wounded or missing.
