Bastin Confirmed As Public Safety Commissioner; Police Chief Search Begins

The Urban County Council confirmed Lexington Police Chief Ronnie Bastin’s appointment to become the next Fayette County Public Safety Commissioner.

His promotion, creates an opening for Police Chief.  Bastin joined the Lexington Police Department about 30 years ago, and worked his way up Police Chief.

Lexington has a long history of promoting from within.  The official Police Chief job posting asks candidates to have knowledge of city ordinances, local laws, and department rules.

Mayor Jim Gray appointed a 9-person search committee to interview candidates and make a recommendation.

Rev. Willis Polk is one of the committee members.  He sees long-term benefits of making an internal hire.

"It lets future applicants know that if you put in your time, serve, serve well, huge opportunities," said Rev. Polk.

The committee has not yet met.  Candidates have until next Wednesday to apply.

Polk says he wants the best possible candidate for Lexington.  He likes the job Bastin did, and does not want drastic change.

The next chief will answer to Bastin.  Lexington’s Police Chief reports to the Public Safety Commissioner.
