Baptist Health Hardin adds new weapons detection system after hospital shooting
ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Baptist Health Hardin is increasing security at its emergency department entrance with the installation of a new weapons detection system, part of the hospital’s response to an officer-involved shooting that occurred inside the facility last fall.
The incident happened in October 2024, when a man reportedly fired a weapon inside the hospital. Elizabethtown police responded, and the suspect was shot by officers but survived.
In the wake of that event, the hospital is implementing new measures aimed at preventing future threats. The upgraded detection system allows for weapons screening without requiring visitors to remove personal items such as keys or cell phones. Bags, however, may still be subject to search.
All weapons remain prohibited on hospital grounds.
