Bank robbery suspect dies in crash during police chase
The Fayette County Coroner says that suspect was 30-year-old Lonnie Ray Hatfield Jr. of Richmond.
It started around 10 Saturday morning when police say Hatfield Jr. robbed the Fifth Third Bank on Richmond Road. Police say they were told by bank employees, Hatfield Jr. gave them a note and got the money.
They then told officers he got in a car near Walmart, where they spotted the license plate number and relayed that to police. Officers say that vehicle was spotted on I-75 headed south. When police tried to pull him over, they say he stopped but then took off.
Officers say the vehicle exited at 104, which is Athens-Boonesboro Road, then tried to get back on I-75 when it hit an embankment.
Officers say Hatfield Jr. was killed in that crash and is believed to be the only person involved in both the crash and the robbery.
