Backpack In Van Grill Leads To Injured Teen

A backpack embedded in the grill of a van led deputies to a teenager lying critically injured in a ditch along a Laurel county road.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to Green Field Lane near London around 8:50 p.m. on Thursday after a person reported a man banging on the door.

When deputies arrived, they found a man passed out in a van with a whisky bottle nearby. They said Terry Mullins, 47, was intoxicated so they placed him in a police car.

It turns out, Mullins owned the home he was trying to get into.

Law enforcement gave Mullins a blood alcohol test and arrested him for driving under the influence.

The sheriff said that’s when deputies noticed the right front end of the van was damaged and the windshield was broken with hair embedded in it.

They also found a backpack wedged in the front grill.

Deputies said they found identification in the backpack and went to the address listed on it and spoke to the parents of a 17-year-old.

His parents told deputies their son was overdue and had left riding on a bicycle.

The sheriff said deputies and Kentucky State Police began searching the area along U.S. 25 and discovered the teenager critically injured in a ditch around 10 p.m.

He was airlifted to the University of Kentucky hospital.

Investigators said they determined Mullins was traveling on U.S. 25 when he ran off the shoulder of the road, struck the teenager then fled the scene.

Mullins is charged with assault, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to render aid, driving under the influence and operating on suspended or revoked operators license.

At the Laurel County District Court on Friday, Mullins pleaded not guilty to those charges.

The sheriff said Mullins is also wanted on two outstanding bench warrants in Laurel county.  He pleaded guilty to a contempt charge for not showing up to court in November 2012.

Mullins is scheduled for court on September 9.
