Backgrounds key in race devoid of policy differences
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky’s Republican candidates for governor are focusing on their backgrounds in the final days of a campaign that has been devoid of policy disputes.
Matt Bevin and Hal Heiner, both millionaires from Louisville, have focused on their more humble upbringings. Bevin told voters in Lexington about how he grew up below the poverty line in New Hampshire while Heiner told voters in Elizabethtown he worked a series of minimum wage jobs to help pay his way through college.
Candidate James Comer has focused on his background in the private sector, including his farming operation in western Kentucky and his time as a director of South Central Bank. Comer became the state agriculture commissioner after an 11-year career in the state legislature.
The election is Tuesday. The winner will likely face Democrat Jack Conway in November.
